How ART helps heal childhood trauma

It can be easy for us to minimize negative childhood experiences.

“It wasn’t that bad.”
“Other people had it worse.”
“That was a long time ago.”

Acknowledging childhood pain can feel unnecessary (“What’s the point of bringing it up? That was a long time ago!”) — or even overwhelming. So it gets pushed aside.

But time passing doesn’t always mean something has healed.

When “A Long Time Ago” Still Feels Close

Childhood trauma doesn’t only refer to extreme events. It can include:

  • Subtle emotional neglect

  • Chronic criticism

  • Growing up feeling unseen or unheard

  • Emotional abuse

  • Physical abuse

  • Sexual abuse

  • Witnessing violence in the home

As adults, many people begin to notice that certain memories still carry a charge.

You might experience:

  • Intrusive images or flashbacks

  • Your body tensing when you think about specific moments

  • Strong reactions in conflict that feel bigger than the situation

  • Anxiety that doesn’t fully make sense

  • Emotional numbness or shutdown

These reactions are not character flaws.

They’re often signs that your nervous system hasn’t fully processed what happened.

And time alone doesn’t always resolve that.

Why Childhood Trauma Can Still Affect You Years Later

When something overwhelming happens in childhood, the brain may store the memory in a way that can keep it emotionally active.

Even years later, certain tones of voice, relationship dynamics, or situations can trigger reactions that feel immediate and intense — as if the past is still unfolding.

You may logically know you’re safe, but your body responds differently.

This is where trauma processing therapy can help.

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy® (ART) is a brief, structured form of psychotherapy that helps people process distressing memories and symptoms by changing how those memories are stored in the brain. ART removes triggers by erasing negative images from view. ART uses guided eye movements and visualization techniques to reduce emotional and physical reactions to past experiences while allowing you to stay fully in control. Many clients report significant relief in just a few sessions. Trauma and many other issues can often be resolved in just one session.

What to Expect

ART sessions are typically 60 minutes and follow a step-by-step process guided by me. You do not need to describe your trauma in detail to benefit. I will guide you through visualization and gentle eye movements to help your brain reprocess distressing images or sensations safely and effectively.
